Artist Biography

Belina Buisson-Wright, born in 1977, is a native Floridian of Haitian American descent. Wright went to college to become a teacher and taught for 8 years until she began to home school her children. During her years of classroom instruction she began experimenting with acrylic paints.

Wright is a self-taught artist that believes her ability to paint is a God given gift. She is is fascinated by the music, art, clothing and customs of various cultures. Her art is strongly influenced by her Haitian and African-American heritage. She tries to capture its vibrancy in her work. She enjoys painting people in their element from the extreme to the simple and mundane whether it's laughing, dancing, singing or working. Her Haitian influenced pieces usually depict tall, stylized women holding baskets. Wright believes there is a grace, strength and beauty in these women carrying their goods.

She has participated in various traditional and online exhibitions. She also participates in local art events in the city of Eustis, Florida

Artist’s Statement

"I am a self-taught artist and because of this I create freely without fear of breaking artistic rules. I have various methods of creating my work and do not like to be labeled as only one style of painter. My art has a strong Haitian art style influence. Living in the U.S. I didn't get to experience much of the Haitian culture growing up. this style allows me to identify with that part of my heritage. When I did visit Haiti I remember the movement and the energy of people talking, laughing or haggling in the market place and the sprit of community. I try to capture the beauty in the day-to-day and extraordinary features of my cultural background.

I often include faceless stylized women wearing red kerchiefs and carrying baskets. I also use bright colors and random strokes in the backgrounds to create energy and movement. I am a very loose painter. I don't believe a lot of detail is needed to capture the essence of a piece. Initially you notice the color in my work but if you look closely you see the beauty of hidden details showing through the layers.

I am currently working on a series of paintings that involve bright colors, earth tones, patterns, and images of men and women of color with natural hair. These ideas emerged from sketches and scribbles in my sketchbook as a celebration of self acceptance."

Belina's work will be available for purchase at the Leesburg Art Festival in the Emerging Artists section.
